A middle-aged was today found guilty of harassing his wife and driving her to end her life and sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment by a court here.

In his order, Thane Additional Sessions Judge A S Waghwase also held the accused guilty under Section 498A (subjecting a wife to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code.

Additional Public Prosecutor Buleshwar Hinge told the court that the couple Srinivas Bhimanayani and Nagamani Srinivas lived in Padmanagar locality.

On June 27, 2009, when Srinivas demanded money from his wife for drinking, his wife obliged, according to the prosecution.

Next day, when he asked her money for drinking again, she refused, after which he beat her up black and blue.

Fed up of beatings, she poured kerosene on herself and burnt herself. She died after being admitted to hospital, the court was told.

The court relied on her dying declaration as well as submissions made by the prosecutor to sentence the accused to five years' rigorous imprisonment.
