A special court here has sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl in suburban Andheri in January 2014.
The special court for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act yesterday convicted the accused Ayaz Ansari and awarded the sentence.
The special court judge Surekha Patil also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Ansari, out of which Rs 20,000 will be paid to the victim.

According to the prosecution, Ansari is a history-sheeter and there are 21 cases registered against him, including 13 sexual offences.
On the day of the incident, the victim was going home alone, when Ansari stopped her. On the pretext of getting her father's phone number from her, he took the girl to a secluded building in Andheri and sexually assaulted her there. Based on a complaint by the victim, Ansari was later arrested.
The prosecution had examined 12 witnesses, including the victim's grandmother, with whom she was living.
Ansari had claimed that it was a case of mistaken identity. However, the court rejected the claim and convicted him.
The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to give sufficient compensation to the victim.
