A local court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for beheading his neighbour following a dispute over pruning a tree in 2013.

Jhargram Fast Track Court 1 judge Bibhas Ranjan De yesterday found Brindaban Singh guilty of murdering his neighbour Ranjit Singh. The judge pronounced the quantum of punishment today.

According to prosecution, Brindaban, a resident of Nayagram in West Midnapore district, had a neem tree in his courtyard and some of its branches reached his Ranjit's compound.

Ranjit asked Brindaban to prune those branches and the former told him to do it himself and he did that.

However, after seeing that the tree had been pruned, Brindaban was enraged. He called Ranjit, demanded an explanation and during an altercation, beheaded him with a sword on August 28, 2013.
