A special CBI court in Jalgoan in north Maharashtra today convicted a man for the 2005 murder of the district president of Congress and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

"The Jalgoan court has convicted Raju Sonawane in a case relating to the murder of professor Vishram Girdhar Patil in Jalgaon", CBI said in a release here.

According to CBI, Patil, the then district president of Congress, had been killed in September 2005 near Manraj Park in Jalgaon. CBI had arrested four persons including Sonawane for the murder. The case was transferred to CBI in 2007 by the Bombay High Court.

While one of the accused died during the trial, two other accused approached the Bombay High Court seeking separation of the trial, which was later granted.

The court framed charges against Sonawane and the trial commenced against him in October 2009.

The special court accepted CBI's case and convicted and sentenced Sonawane to life imprisonment, the release said.
