A local court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment in Ganjam district for killing a CPI panchayat samiti chairman six years ago.

Additional District Judge of Chhatrapur, Sovan Das, while pronouncing the jail term for Harihar Nayak of Ghadaghadapalli for killing CPI leader N Simanchal Reddy also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000.

The court, however, acquitted another accused named K Dandapani Reddy due to lack of evidence.

Reddy was shot dead near the CPI office at Chamakhandi on September 22, 2010 when he was going home from the party office. He was taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

In protest against the incident, CPI supporters in the area had blocked the National Highway 5 at Chhatrapur.

Police had arrested two persons in this connection.
