A man in his forties was Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court here for murdering his cousin over a property dispute nearly 21 years ago.

Principal judge VG Bisht convicted Kalya Mehboob Khan for assaulting his uncle Abdul Khan and cousins with sharp-edged weapons in November 1998 at their residence in suburban Jogeshwari in Mumbai.

One of Abdul Khan's sons, Noor Khan, had sustained serious injuries in the attack when he tried to save his father. He died on his way to hospital, the prosecution told the court.

Based on a complaint lodged by Noor Khan's sister Gausabi Sheikh, police had registered a case against Kalya Mehboob Khan, his mother Imambi and brother Sharif Sheikh.

Imambi and Sharif were already convicted in the case. Kalya Mehboob Khan was tried separately.

According to prosecution, a pending dispute over property was the trigger behind the crime.
