A man who had smothered to death his wife with a pillow after a quarrel was today sentenced to life term by a Delhi court.

District Judge J R Aryan awarded the jail term to Bihar native Rabbani saying the case does not fall in the category of rarest of rare.

"Conviction has been held on circumstantial evidence. Accordingly, accused Rabbani is awarded imprisonment for life and a fine of Rs 1000," the court said.

It noted that the victim was last seen with Rabbani.

According to prosecution, the accused along with his wife Famida and 18-month-old child had gone to the house of her parents on May 16, 2011 and a quarrel took place there between the couple.

They returned to their house in north-east Delhi in the night and there again they had a heated argument following which Rabbani assualted his wife, it said adding that he smothered his wife with a pillow leading to her death.

After killing the victim, Rabbani fled from there and was later arrested by the police on the complaint of Famida's parents.

The accused claimed he had not killed his wife and as she was suffering from TB, she might have died due to the disease.

The court, however, said that the couple had left the house of the victim's parents together in the night and there was no reasonable explanation from the accused as to how his wife died.
