A woman and her two daughters were brutally killed with a hammer here early today allegedly by her husband, who was in depression due to financial issues.

Pranab Mahanta is suspected to have driven out of the house after the ghastly killings and committed suicide by jumping into Brahmaputra river, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Basistha) Iftekar Ali said.

The car was found at Sarighat bridge on the river this morning. "We have alerted the river police, but his body is not found yet," Ali said.

"The preliminary investigation says the husband killed his wife and two daughters with a big hammer inside their house. We have also recovered a suicide note, in which the husband accepted the crime," he said.

The two girls were students of class XII and VI, he added.

The ACP said relatives and neighbours of the family claimed that Mahanta was going through depression as he had huge amount of money receivable in his business.
