A 40-year-old man was arrested for posing as an employee of the Sri Lankan High Commission and using a Honda Civic car with the high commission's registration number, the police said today.

The accused, Nitin Malhotra, was arrested yesterday from Farsh Bazar area of Shahdara.

The black Honda civic, bearing the registration number 65 CD 24, was found parked inside an apartment complex in east Arjun Nagar.

When confronted, Malhotra introduced himself as an employee of the Lankan high commission. However, the police soon caught his lie.

Malhotra had purchased the car from a Sri Lankan minister, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad.

As per the documents recovered from the accused, the registration number was cancelled on July 15 last year.

A new registration number was issued to the accused but he did not remove the earlier numberplate to obtain the privileges available to the original owner of the vehicle, said the officer.
