A man from Dombivili here was arrested here for possessing a 12 bore gun allegedly without valid licence, police said today.

The man, identified as Umesh Singh (35) has been held for possessing the weapon without valid licence, Assistant police inspector of Kalyan Crime Unit III, D N Khedkar told reporters.

He said that Singh told police that he was working as a security guard, and hence, possessed the gun.

The accused claimed that he obtained the licence for the gun from Muzaffarupur district magistrate in Bihar after paying Rs 25,000 through an agent, whose name was given as Choubey, the API said.

"The licence which the accused has is fake. He claims that it was given to him by the agent. Choubey told Singh that he had procured it from the district magistrate office," the officer said.

Police is now trying to find out as to how many such guns have come into Thane and in adjoining areas and where are they being used as they suspect that some racket must be operating to bring arms illegally into the state.

The duo have been held under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) rw 34 (common intention) and relevant sections of Arms Act-1959.
