Man held for smuggling gold worth Rs 30 lakh at airport

A man has been arrested at the airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valued at about Rs 30 lakh.

The accused was intercepted by customs officials on his arrival from Riyadh here yesterday. On detailed examination of his baggage, no contraband was found but his personal search yielded ten gold bars weighing 1.17 kg concealed in his socks, a customs official said.

The value of the recovered gold bars is Rs 30.91 lakh.

The accused was arrested, he said.

Another man was arrested today by customs officials for illegally carrying foreign currency equivalent to about Rs 21 lakh at the airport. The accused, who was going to Dubai, was intercepted by customs officials and his baggage checked which resulted in recovery of assorted foreign currencies, the official said.
 

The passenger could not provide evidence in support of lawful possession of the foreign currency, which is equivalent to Rs 21.80 lakh, he said.
