A 27-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly spreading rumours on social media about burglars and kidnappers roaming about in the city, police said.
Eshwar Singh alias Akhi Singh was arrested after police registered a suo motu case and seized a mobile phone from him.
Cyber Crime Police station found a video posted on social media containing a tagline 'Kids Kidnappers in Mallepally Division' and the post was shared by others.
Posts containing fake/false news were creating panic among public and the rumours may induce other persons to commit an offence against innocent people, police said.
Despite police giving clarification in this regard, some people are deliberately spreading the rumours to create panic, they said.
On May 27, two students were arrested for allegedly forwarding a fake video and audio along with false information among the public through social media claiming that some gangs came to commit offences in Pahadishareef area here.

Telangana Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy has already said false news was being spread on social media that certain gangs are on the prowl in Telangana state which is totally false.
There is absolutely no movement of criminal gangs whether child abductors, robbery/burglary gangs, he said.
The DGP had warned of stern action against those fowarding such false messages on social media and also those taking the law into their hands and causing harm to innocent individuals.
