A garment workshop foreman has been detained for hiring child labourers in China's eastern Jiangsu Province, local officials said today.

The foreman, Feng, 40, was running the workshop without a license in Changshu city, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The workshop appeared in a video showing child labourers working overtime in Changshu, which was released yesterday by an online video platform.

It quickly went viral. The local government carried out an inspection of 1,797 workshops and 163 shops and enterprises, finding eight suspected child labouers.

The children will be taking classes at a vocational school until the case is settled.

Changshu has one of the largest garment industries in China.

Since 2012 there have been a total of 107 child labour cases found in Changshu, involving 211 children.
