A man was arrested today and 29 kg of cannabis found in his possession from Basirhat area near the Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district, police said.
Additional SP (headquarters) Gourav Lal said Abdul Baki Mondal was intercepted by a district police team following a tip-off and the contraband seized from him.
Lal said police are also examining if this was the same person having served a seven-year jail sentence in Tihar Correctional Home in Delhi in the past.

"We are contacting our counterparts in Delhi Police to know the antecedents of one Abdul Mondal who had been a Tihar jail inmate in past and if the two persons were the same. Also what were the charges against that Tihar Jail inmate and whether he was involved in any terror activities. It is too early but we are probing all angles," another district police officcial said.
Mondal's nationality was also being examined.
The West Bengal Police and BSF have stepped up surveillance along the border areas in the districts following the Holey Artisan Bakery attack in Dhaka two weeks ago.
