A man was today arrested after police recovered banned Chinese manja (glass-coated kite string) from his possession in Pacca Danga area of the city.

During a routine patrol, a police party intercepted a person moving under suspicious circumstances at ChowkChabutra area of Pacca Danga this afternoon, a police spokesman said.

He said the search of his bag led to the recovery of seven rolls of the string locally called as "Gattu Dor", following which he was arrested.

The man was trying to sell the banned kite string among the local youth on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, he added.

A case under relevant sections of law has been registered against him, he said.

The use of 'Chinese' kite strings, made of nylon or any synthetic material which is non-biodegradable, was recently banned by the National Green Tribunal on the grounds that it posed threat to life and the environment.
