The Customs Department held a Mumbai-based man, allegedly involved in a smuggling attempt, with around 700 grams gold worth Rs 18.75 lakh at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport here today.

"A person identified as Salim Syed was arrested today at the city airport, when he tried to smuggle in six gold bars worth Rs 18.75 lakh by hiding it in his rectum," a Customs official said.

"Syed, a native of Mumbai, arrived on Air India flight number AI-019 from Delhi as a domestic passenger," the official said.
