A 25-year-old man was detained at the New Delhi railway station with old notes worth Rs 31 lakh in his possession, police said today.

Shibasheed Mahapatra was detained yesterday around 10 PM with Rs 31 lakh in old currency notes that he was allegedly taking to Orissa, DCP (Railways) Parwaiz Ahmed said.

"The cash was detected at the X-ray baggage scanner machine and was immediately taken into possession. He was passing through the main hall entry gate at Paharganj side of the station to board the Purshottam Express for Bhubaneswar," he said.

The Income Tax department was informed and Mahapatra handed over to them along with the cash, Ahmed said.
