A 58-year-old man was detained here today after he was found to have concealed three kg of gold in his waist belt to allegedly smuggle it by train to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to evade tax, police said.

Sathyanarayana, an employee of a jewellery store in Andhra Pradesh, was detained by security personnel at the Central Railway Station after it was found that he had hidden the gold in his belt.

"When he walked through the metal detector, signals indicating the metal's presence was shown," an official said.

He was scheduled to take a train to Andhra Pradesh. As he did not produce valid documents for carrying the gold, it was seized.

Both the man and the gold were handed over to officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further investigation, sources added.

The seizure comes against the backdrop of several incidents of thwarted attempts to smuggle gold through air to the city.
