A Chinese man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegally transporting wild animal products including rhino horns to neighbouring countries.

Zhang, a native of Guandong province, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and slapped with a fine of 50,000 yuan (USD 7,740) by the the Intermediate People's Court of Fangchenggang City.

Zhang attempted to transport 2.2 kilogram of ivory products, 0.69 kilogram of rhino horn fragments as well as 0.19 kilogram of lions' teeth on March 16 last year from Dongxing City in Guangxi to Fangchenggang, state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

He then intended to smuggle the wild animal products to neighbouring countries. All the products are worth more than 260,000 yuan (USD 40220.60) and were from rare or protected animals, it said.

Zhang was initially given the verdict by the people's court of Dongxing city, which said he had committed the crime of illegally transporting wild animal products.

The Intermediate People's Court of Fangchenggang City upheld the verdict after Zhang appealed.
