Man jailed for five years for possessing 44 kgs of poppy straw

A Delhi court has awarded five years jail term to a man for possessing 44 kgs of poppy straw, a banned drug.

Special Judge Shail Jain awarded the jail term to Punjab resident Balvinder Singh and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

"Considering the fact and circumstances of the case that the convict was found in possession of 44 kgs of poppy straw, which is only 6 kgs short of being a commercial quantity, the convict is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 5 years and to pay fine of Rs 10,000 for under the provisions of the NDPS Act," the court said.
 

According to the prosecution, Singh was caught by the Delhi Police from ISBT, Kashmere Gate here on the intervening night of February 25-26, this year and he was found possessing the narcotic substance.

In May 2012, the police charged him with several sections of the NDPS Act.

Singh, however, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.
