Man jailed for killing wife for dowry

A man was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry in Kanchipada village in Simulia police station in Odisha's Balasore district.

Additional District Judge of Balasore R K Sahu pronounced the punishment for 32-year-old Bibhuti Mallik of Kanchipada village for killing his wife Laxmipriya Mallik.

He was awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 3000 and in default to pay the fine to undergo another 3 months of jail term.

According to the prosecution, Laxmipriya was subjected to continuous torture by her husband for more dowry. With his persistent demands not being met, Bibhuti hit her with a heavy wooden stick and she died on April 3, 2005.
 

He was arrested after Laxmipriya's father lodged a complaint, sources said.
