From preliminary investigation, it appears that there was some marital discord but the reason has not been ascertained. It is also believed that the couple had a heated argument last night, an official privy to the investigation said.

Police have questioned Lakshmi's brother and it has emerged that she was not in touch with any of her relatives for the last few years. Mahesh's relatives are yet to be questioned, he said.

Mahesh is learnt to have fathered four children from his first marriage. But no other person was present in the house when the incident took place. The exact time of the incident is also yet to be ascertained.

Mahesh and Lakshmi were both natives of Uttar Pradesh. While Mahesh worked as a cook, his wife worked at a nearby factory, the official said.

The incident came to light when a tenant went to their house to deposit the rent and found Mahesh's body on the floor of one room and the bodies of the wife and daughter on the bed of the adjacent room. He raised an alarm, following which a neighbour called up police, the official added.
