A 21-year-old student died while his three friends sustained minor burn injuries in a fire at a three-storey building in north Delhi's Burari area, early this morning.

The fire was reported in the building at Santnagar, Burari around 4 am, a Delhi Fire Service official said.

Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the fire. The firefighters rescued people living on the ground and the upper floors of the building, he said.

The deceased Sandeep and his friends Surender, Vineet and Abhishek, tried to escape when the fire was noticed. Sandeep who tried to escape through terrace of the building climbed up to third storey and was somehow trapped resulting in his death due to suffocation caused by dense fumes, said a police officer.

All the four students who hailed from UP and prepared for competitive examinations were sleeping when the fire broke out.

Vineet, Surender and Abhishek escaped with minor injuries. Family members of Sandeep have been contacted and his body has been sent for post mortem, said the officer.

The fire broke out in the garage on the ground floor due to a suspected short circuit, he said.

Investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the fire and whether there were any lapses in fire safety measures in the building, he added.
