Irked by his wife questioning him over buying a costly mobile phone, a farmer killed her at their house on the city's outskirts, police said.
Balamurugan (38), a habitual drinker, had bought the Rs 9,000 phone and showed it to his wife Muthulakshmi at their house in Kinathukadavu late last night, they added.
When she questioned why he had bought such a costly phone as they were facing financial problems, Balamurugan in a fit of rage hit her on the head with a pickaxe, killing her on the spot, police said.
The farmer was arrested after police rushed to the spot on receiving information about the incident.
