Superintendent of Police Syed Mohammad Hossain Mirza said the incident occurred at Jashapur village under Madhabdihi police station where the house was also ransacked by the group.

College student Nargis Chowdhury secretly married his boyfriend, Sk Maidul Islam, a glass worker of Jashapur village, on December 11. The girl lived at his maternal uncle's house in the village for studying.

The two also got their marriage registered at Chandernagar in neighbouring Hooghly district.

When they returned to the village on Saturday, Nargis' uncle and his family members tried to persuade her into returning but failed, the SP said adding Maidul and family members were also allegedly threatened by them.

When nothing worked, the uncle allegedly led a mob and attacked Maidul's house last night injuring his mother and two sisters-in-law besides ransacking the house.

While fleeing after the attack, they tried to take Nargis with them but failed.

The SP said the three were hospitalised while the uncle and his family members were absconding.

Nargis said she hoped the administration would help them as both she and her husband were adults.
