A 28-year-old man was allegedly lynched by an irate mob after he was caught trying to steal from a residential locality in Bhiwandi town in the district in the wee hours today.

Police have arrested three persons in this connection.

"Around 4.30 AM today, the deceased identified as Mehamud Abdul Hamid Hashami, a resident of Dongarpada, entered the residence of one Mazarali Rashid Ansari (57) and was about to steal his mobile phone and cash," inspector Dhanaji Kshirsagar of Bhiwandi taluka police station said.

However, the owner of the house caught Mehamud, pinned him down and raised an alarm, following which the neighbours came to the site and severely thrashed him, he said.

"Mehamud was beaten up with iron rods, bamboos and other blunt objects. They also reportedly put chilli powder in his private parts. Due to severe beating, the youth died on the spot, after which the mob dumped his body near Ansari's house," police said.

The police recovered the body from the spot and sent it for post-mortem to the government hospital.

After the widow of the victim identified the attackers, the police arrested three persons and booked them and several others under various sections of IPC.

Police are looking for other eight accused and further investigation is on.
