A 41-year-old man allegedly murdered his friend following an argument over some minor issue in Balodabazar-Bhatapara district in Chhattisgarh and also tried to burn his body, police said today.

The incident took place outside the Congress party office in Bhatapara on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

The accused Hanuman Tiwari was arrested for the murder of Pradeep Jain (40), they said.

"Jain, who used to sell earthen pots, was murdered by Tiwari following an argument between them over some minor issue. The incident took place outside the Bhatapara Congress office under Bhatapara police station limits," Station House Officer BR Gupta told PTI.

As per preliminary investigation, the duo had consumed liquor in the courtyard of the Congress office at night when it was locked. Soon a scuffle broke out between them over some minor issue, which turned violent, he said.

"Tiwari hit Jain on his head with bricks and wooden sticks, following which he died on the spot. Later, Tiwari also tried to set the body on fire in a bid to hide his identity," the SHO said.

After somebody alerted to police about the incident, a team was rushed to the spot and victim's body was sent for post-mortem, the SHO added.

Tiwari was arrested from the site on suspicion, who later confessed to having committed the crime, Gupta said.

A case was registered in this connection and further investigation is on.
