A man, who killed his pregnant wife and tried to murder his one-year-old daughter, has been awarded life imprisonment by a Delhi court, saying he had the
motive to kill the woman as he suspected her character.
The court sentenced Varanasi native Jai Prakash to rigorous jail term for strangulating his wife and slitting his youngest daughter's throat in February 2014.

"In view of discussions, it can be held that the accused suspected the character of the deceased (wife) and had the motive to indulge in such an act," Additional Sessions Judge Pankaj Gupta said.
The court also said "the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was present at the scene of crime on the given date and time and had the motive to commit the offence. The victim (daughter) was only aged about one year on the date of incident. Throat injury sustained by the victim was on the vital part of her body."
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Prakash.
According to the prosecution, on February 3, 2014, Prakash sent his mother-in-law out of their house in Begumpur in north west Delhi on some pretext and had a quarrel with his wife Promila.
Later, he strangulated his wife and slit the child's throat and took his other two children and fled from the spot, it said.

During the trial, the man claimed innocence and said he had been falsely implicated in the case.
