A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 15 lakh over a period of three years after making a false promise that he would marry her.

The accused, Dileep Kumar, befriended the victim on a social networking site in 2010 and later they developed a close bond, police said.

According to the complaint registered at Ranjeet Nagar police station, Kumar, who had identified himself as Karan Kapoor on Facebook, won the woman's confidence and proposed her for marriage.

Later, on Kumar's demand she sent him an ATM Card of SBI Bank, a mobile phone, clothes and other items, she alleged in the complaint.

She said that the accused refused to marry her after she stopped sending him money. Kumar was arrested on Saturday.

"Once she was won over, he concocted stories of business losses and finances required for treatment of his parents etc and asked her to help him to tide over financial difficulties engulfing him.

"Believing him to be true she opened an account in her name for his exclusive use so that, he could withdraw the money whenever he requires," said Alok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).

"The accused was nabbed with the help of the transaction details between the accused and the victim. We have also recovered two ATM cards, three SIM cards, a voter Id and a phone from the accused," Kumar said.
