A 40-year-old man was sentenced to ten years imprisonment by a court in Kendrapara district for attacking a tribal girl and chopping off her fingers last year.

While convicting Sanatan Bhoi yesterday on the basis of circumstantial evidence and deposition of witnesses, Kendrapara district and sessions judge B K Mohanty also slapped a penalty of Rs 31,000 on the convict.

According to the prosecution, Bhoi had developed an infatuation towards the college student and had attacked her on July 24 last year at Bada Mangala junction of the township.

As the girl had rejected his advances, the man committed the crime in a fit of rage.

The court held the accused guilty and convicted him under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of Indian Penal Code.
