A man was today sentenced to death for raping and murdering his nine-year-old daughter with the court describing his act as "abominable and outrageous".
Mahila court judge A Kayal Vizhi also awarded him double life imprisonment for rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act and IPC section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) besides imposing a fine of Rs 15,000.
According to the prosecution, accused M Mari (51), father of eight children and an alcoholic, raped his youngest daughter on a beach at Karaiyur in Rameswaram Island, murdered her and then flung her body into the sea.

As her body was washed ashore, police seized it and sent it for post-mortem, which found that she had been raped and murdered.
Following a quarrel, Mari's wife had left him and had gone to her first daughter's house with the other children. She had left her youngest daughter at a relative's house.
The prosecution said the accused had gone to the relative's house and forced them to hand over the girl to him, assuring them that he would take care of her.
But he took her to the beach, raped and murdered her on April 23, 2013, the prosecution said.
The judge condemned Mari's act describing it as "abominable and outrageous" and sentenced him to death.
