A 24-year-old man was handed down four years imprisonment by a local court after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor girl here in 2003.

Additional Sessions Judge of Joura tehsil in the district R K Srivastava yesterday convicted Ravi Baghel for four years and imposed a fine of Rs 400 on him under Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Assistant Public Prosecutor Lokendra Tomar told PTI.

He said the court found Baghel guilty of catching the 16-year-old minor girl with an intent to sexually abuse her on December 21, 2003. After the girl's stiff resistance, he thrashed her.

Tomar said after Baghel's sexual advances, the minor had raised an alarm following which her mother working at nearby field came to her rescue and the accused fled the spot at Dodi village.

He said after the report was lodged with police it filed a chargesheet leading to Baghel's conviction.
