Man sentenced to jail for rape within 2 weeks of incident

A 50-year-old man was today sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 for raping a minor, just 14 days after the incident here.

Bijan Shil, a barber, raped an eight-year-old in her home on December 6 when no one else was present in the premises. Locals caught the barber and handed him over to police.

Shil was arrested the same day and police submitted a charge sheet on December 9.

Public Prosecutor Nasiruddin Ahmed said, "This is perhaps the fastest case of punishment in West Bengal. It took only 14 days."

The trial started on December 12. There were 14 witnesses.
 

Jimut Bahan Biswas, Additional Session Judge (Second Court in Charge, POCSO Act) pronounced the punishment of five years' imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000.
