A sessions court here today convicted a person and sentenced him to life imprisonment for killing a police constable when the latter went to arrest him.

Police said in November 2014 they received a phone call saying that a thief had entered the BPCL building in Dongri.

The accused Santosh Salvi had locked himself on the terrace of the building. And when the police reached the spot he started throwing stones at them. He also did not relent to their call asking him to surrender.

A police constable, Ajay Gawande, climbed up the grill but the accused hit him with a long wooden plank and Gawande fell down and subsequently died.

Salvi was finally arrested. In the court, public prosecutor Shishir Hire examined eight witnesses to prove the case.

The court accepted the testimony of policemen and a journalist who was present at the spot.
