Man sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, murder

A special court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping and murdering an 11-year-old Dalit girl eight years ago.

Additional District Session judge Surender Kumar sentenced Bharatvir and slapped a fine of Rs 35,000 on him.

The second accused in the case, Vijay, died in jail, the prosecution said.

Bharatvir, along with Vijay, had abducted the girl on January 8, 2009, while she was cutting grass at a field. They raped the girl and then murdered her, it added.

He was found guilty under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 364 (abduction) of IPC and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
