Jitendra Sharma succumbed to severe burns in a hospital this afternoon, they said adding the incident took place late last night in Murtikala colony.
Before his death, Sharma, in a statement to police, said he had a verbal duel with two youths on a motor-cycle when he was returning home in an auto-rickshaw.
Though the youths left, they soon returned with some inflammable substance.
According to the statement, the youths caught hold of Sharma when he was about to enter his house and set him on fire.
Family members and locals rushed Sharma to SMS hospital.
After Sharma's death, his family members held a protest inside the hospital accusing doctors of negligence.
Senior police officers pacified them after which they left the hospital premises.
