A man allegedly set himself on fire in front of the district magistrate's office at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra Thursday seeking removal of encroachments, police said.
Tausif Hanif Shaikh (30) received 76 per cent burn injuries in the incident, police said.
Shaikh was demanding removal of encroachments on the land belonging to Peer Daval Malik temple trust at Karjat, 50 km from here, police said.
He had threatened to immolate himself a week ago, setting the administration Thursday's deadline for taking action, said a police official.
Around 3 PM Thursday, he poured kerosene and set himself afire, he said.
He was rushed to the government hospital and his condition was said to be serious, the police officer said.
