A 28-year-old man was shot dead by two unidentified persons in north Delhi's Sarai Rohilla area this evening when he resisted their attempt to snatch his bag, police said.

Amarchand, a cloth merchant, was returning home in an autorickshaw. When he reached near Sarai Rohilla DDA flats, he got down the three-wheeler and started walking, they said.

Two men came from behind and tried to snatch his bag. When he resisted, they shot at in the head and fled with the bag. The victim was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment, police said.

Following the incident, irate locals protested outside the Sarai Rohilla Police Station, they said.

Prima facie, the assailants had come with an intention to loot him but they did not know the contents of the bag, a senior police officer said.

Police are scanning the CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused and ascertain whether they were following the cloth merchant.
