A 35-year-old man was strangulated to death allegedly by his wife and a paramour in East Delhi's Ashok Nagar area following which the couple was arrested, police said today.

Victim Salim was murdered by his 26-year-old wife Gulistan and her alleged lover Rizwan (24) on the intervening night of June 24 and 25, a senior police officer said.

The accused were arrested yesterday. Rizwan was a distant relative of the couple and was living with them for a few months, the officer said.

Upon interrogation it was revealed that Salim and Gulistan often quarrelled after the former suspected her of having an illicit relationship with Rizwan. The wife refuted the allegations and convinced him having baseless suspicion, the officer said.

Gulistan and Rizwan hatched a plan to eliminate her husband and invited him for a celebration where the victim, who was under the influence of alcohol, was strangulated by them, he said.

The accused called the police next day and reported his death, but police found several loopholes in their statement.

During investigation, the officials also found marks on Salim's neck.

Later, they confessed to their role in the murder when further grilled by the police. An FIR was registered in this connection following their arrests, the officer added.
