N.M.Bagey(50), a resident of Marionbari Tea estate Garridhura in Kurseong sub-division was on his way home from the tea garden when the elephant attacked and trampled him to death on Wednesday night, the sources said quoting delayed reports.
Demanding protection for villagers and their crops from elephant menance, as well as a job for a member Bagey's family, locals demonstrated at the site of the incident, they said.
Area GTA member Pranay Thapa visited the area discussed the problem of tusker problem of the people with the Forest officials.
As per government norms, the family of Bagey will be provided Rs one lakh as compensation, the sources added.
