Man tries to burn alive wife, daughter; attempts suicide

A drunk man made an unsuccessful attempt to set ablaze his wife and daughter before trying to end his life here, police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours today when Mahesh Anant Dalvi (45) reached home past midnight in an inebriated state and picked up a quarrel with his wife Vanita, PSI D B Mukne of Kapurbawadi police station told PTI.

Later, he tried to set afire his wife and daughter Aishwarya (14) by unplugging the pipe connected to the cooking gas and threatened to light the matchstick.

Hearing the commotion, and cries for help, locals and policemen gathered outside his house to help the woman and the girl. Frightened, Dalvi locked the door from inside and attempted to hang himself from the ceiling using a 'dupatta', police said.
 

However, policemen broke in and saved the family. Dalvi was injured in the meele following which he has been admitted to a local hospital.

Police has registered an offence against him based on a complaint by his wife and daughter.

The accused has been booked under sections 284,307, 323, 504 and 506 of the IPC but has not been placed under arrest as he is undergoing treatment.
