A 22-year-old man allegedly tried to kill his 21-year-old girlfriend by slashing her neck with a blade today before attempting to kill himself in suburban Parel in Central Mumbai, police said.

The incident occurred this morning at G D Ambekar Road when Pukar Nate allegedly attacked the woman while she was walking, a senior police official said.

He said Nate and the woman were in a relationship for more than seven years.

However, their relationship soured after Nate shifted to Dombivli in neighbouring Thane district and the woman started avoiding him, apparently after she fell in love with another man, he said.

The victim is a resident of Parel and is working as a computer operator in the same locality, he said.

During their meeting at Parel at 11 AM, the woman told Nate that she was avoiding him because she had fallen in love with another man.

Irked Nate then pulled out a blade which he was carrying with him and attacked her on her neck and hand, he said.

As the woman raised an alarm, locals rushed to her aid. However, before they could overpower Nate he had slashed his hand and neck using the same blade, the official said.

After receiving information of the incident, police personnel rushed to the spot and admitted Nate and the woman to civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel.

Both of them are out of danger now, he said.

"We have registered a case against Nate under various sections of the IPC including section 307 (attempt to murder) and attempt to suicide," he said.
