A passenger, who allegedly tried to smuggle out over 6 kg gold biscuits, valued at Rs 1.97 crore from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad here has been arrested by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.
According to DRI-Hyderabad unit Deputy Director Ch V Chowdary, on detailed examination of baggage of one passenger, who had arrived from Dubai at the airport here late last night, 6.4 kg (55 pcs) of gold biscuits were found.
"He (the passenger) tried to smuggle the gold biscuits into India by concealing them in his hand baggage, walked through the green channel without declaring the same to the Indian Customs and became an ineligible passenger to bring gold in bullion form into India," the DRI official said.
The gold valued at Rs 1.97 crore was subsequently seized by the DRI officers.
The passenger, whose identity was not revealed, was arrested under Section 104 of Customs Act and produced before the court of Special Judge for Economic Offences here which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.
