Man wanted in murder, smuggling cases arrested

A man, wanted in several cases including murder and gold smuggling, for the last six months, was arrested today at nearby Coonoor, police said.

Asaithambi, an advocate by profession and also secretary of Youth wing of Makkal Desam party, was reportedly involved in 14 cases, including five murder cases, in different parts of Tamil Nadu.

A resident of Coimbatore, Asaithambi was also wanted in the smuggling of 2.5 kg gold from Chennai to Kancheepuram, they said.

Tracing his phone calls, police found and took him to custody in his house in Coonoor and was produced before the Judicial Magistrate, M Arunachalam, who allowed the police to take him to Kancheepuram.
 

A section of party workers raised slogans against his arrest, claiming it as 'politically motivated and based on foisted cases', police said.
