The man who allegedly attempted self-immolation and tried to set afire a TRS MP last week at a party rally, upset over denial of party ticket to his leader for the assembly polls, died here Tuesday, police said

R Gattaiah, a supporter of former government whip and Chennur (SC) MLA Nallala Odelu, had doused himself with petrol and allegedly tried to pour it on the MP during the September 12 rally.

Lok Sabha member Balka Suman, however, was shielded by other party workers and escorted to safety.

The man and 15 others were injured when petrol spilled onto a lamp at the rally venue in Mancherial district, triggering a fire, the official said.

Gattaiah suffered over 60 per cent burns. A police inspector and two women were among those injured.

Suman, who has been nominated by the TRS to contest from Chennur in the upcoming assembly elections, had alleged that it was an attempt on his life by a follower of sitting Chennur MLA Nallala Odelu, as he had been 'denied' a ticket.

Asked about the allegations, police said an investigation was on.
