Police tonight arrested the 43-year-old man who stabbed to death his daughter on the eve of her marriage, angered over her decision to tie the knot with a Dalit youth.
Rajan, who was taken into custody yesterday itself, admitted that he was not happy with his daughter Athira's decision to marry Brijesh, a jawan in the army, because he was a Dalit, a senior police officer said.
Malappuram Deputy Superintendent of Police Jaleel Thottathil, who is probing the case, told PTI that the man had stated that he was afraid that people would mock him over his daughter's decision.
In a fit of rage, the accused, who was inebirated, picked up a quarrel with her last evening over the marriage and stabbed her on her chest. Though she was rushed to hospital, her life could not be saved, the DySP said.
A weeping Brijesh told television channels that both he and the woman were cent per cent confident that they would be able to marry and had not sought any help.
Athira (21) was a lab technician in a hospital.
Rajan will be produced in court tomorrow.
