A man who allegedly threatened to decapitate the first Hindu Congresswoman, Tulsi Gabbard, has been sent to jail by a US court.
Aniruddha Sherbow, 42, made two threats to murder the Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii earlier this month, according to newly unsealed court documents.
Sherbow appeared in court in San Diego yesterday and was ordered to remain in jail for now, CNN reported.
He is scheduled to have another court hearing on September 12 and officials want him transferred to the District of Columbia for trial.
On August 1, Sherbow allegedly left an expletive-laden voicemail on Gabbard's cell phone, with the message including a threat to her life. An affidavit said that Gabbard had been getting harassing messages from him since 2011 and identified his voice as the caller.
Sherbow was arrested at Tijuana in Mexico on Wednesday by Baja California State Police after an arrest warrant was issued in the Court for the District of Columbia. The former resident of Hawaii was then turned over to FBI in San Diego.
"The alleged threats occurred on August 1 and August 3, 2013, and were deemed credible," the FBI said.
According to Hawaii Reporter, on August 2, Sherbow wrote an email to FBI and some media outlets vowing to kill Gabbard.
"I, Aniruddha Sherbow, with the Divine as my witness, do hereby solemnly vow to find Tulsi Gabbard, wheresoever she may be, and to sever her head from her body," he wrote.
Sherbow allegedly identified himself by name in the email, according to the affidavit. The subject of the e-mail was "Cutting Off Tulsi Gabbard's Head".
According to media reports from Hawaii, Sherbow was ordered by a local court in 2011 to stay away from her.
The restraining order was issued after Sherbow made a string of verbally abusive telephone calls and sent similar text messages to Gabbard.
Sherbow told The Hawaii Reporter that he was born "into the same obscure Western-Hindu tradition as Tulsi, the Hare Krishna Movement, also known as the Brahma Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya".
Gabbard, a former member of Honolulu City Council, was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2012 and became the first Hindu to serve as a member of US Congress.
