In a unique case, a senior citizen based in Kalyan in the district has won compensation of over Rs 11 lakh from his son and insurance compnay for a road accident which claimed the life of his daughter-in-law.

Ashok Shinde had filed a claim against his son Ashish and the Reliance General Insurance before the Maharashtra Accident Claims Tribunal.

On February 1, 2015, Suvarna Shinde (27), Ashok's daughter-in-law who worked as a nurse, was riding pilion on a scooter with her husband (and Ashok's other son) Rupesh.

While trying to avoid a pedestrian, Rupesh lost control over the two-wheeler and it skidded. Both were thrown off, and Suvarna succumbed to her injuries.

Ashok Shinde, representing the couple's two minor children, filed a claim for compensation against Ashish, who owned the scooter, and the insurance company.

MACT judge K D Vadane last week directed that the owner of the scooter and the insurance company to pay Rs 11.02 lakh to the claimants on various counts.

The money will be invested in fixed deposits until the children turned 18, the court said.
