Mandela was a symbol of struggle for the sake of masses: Left

Condoling the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela, the Left leadership today said Mandela was a symbol of struggle for the masses.

"Nelson Mandela was one of the tallest leaders of 20th century. He was symbol of fight against Capitalism. He was the symbol of fight for the sake of masses," CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said while addressing a rally here.

Senior Left leaders today paid their tributes at a huge portrait of Mandela which was kept in front of the podium.

Mandela, 95, South Africa's first black President died early this morning in Johannesburg.

"Nelson Mandela was not only a leader of South Africa. He had awaken the conscience of the masses across the globe, through his works and life. He never moved away from his dream even after spending 27 years in jail," CPI(M) Politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said.
