Two people, who were arrested on charges of abducting and raping a minor girl in Mandsaur, were remanded to judicial custody by a local court today, an official said.

Irfan (20) and Asif (24) were produced before Additional District and Sessions Judge Nisha Gupta after their police custody expired, said district Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Singh.

"If necessary, we will seek their custody again," he added.

CCTV cameras have been installed in their two separate barracks of the district jail for round-the-clock surveillance, the SP said.

District jail authorities had earlier expressed apprehension that the two accused could be attacked by other inmates, and requested the court to send them elsewhere.

The eight-year-old girl was abducted on June 26 from outside her school, while she was waiting for her parents to come and pick her up, and was raped near the Laxman Darwaja road.

The accused tried to kill her by slitting her throat and also inflicted severe injuries on her face, head and private parts.
